Jonathan and Tess Hicks

Serving In: Solomon Islands
Ministry: Theological Ministry

SAMS Role: Missionary

Home Church: Christ the King Anglican Church, Birmingham, Ala.

Starting Year with SAMS: 2015

Calling to Ministry: Jon spent seven years of his childhood in the Solomon Islands with his parents as they served the Anglican Church building church buildings. Tess grew up on different mission fields in Germany, China, and Kazakhstan. Jon and Tess met in the ninth grade in boarding school and have been together ever since. They both felt called to overseas missions and particularly back to the Solomons. Jon pursued his master’s in divinity and doctorate in theology to be equipped to train and teach future priests. He loves studying God's word, sharing it, and seeing how God's truth intersects and transforms lives.

Ministry Mission: Jon and Tess have been serving at the Trinity School for Theology and Ministry on the island of Malaita since their arrival in 2015. Jon teaches theology and biblical studies to 30 men from different languages and cultural groups. The seminary is a community of daily worship, study, play, and prayer. Tess enjoys her involvement in women's Bible study and one-on-one relationship building with students’ wives. Their role in the Solomons is to serve and train the men and women who will be sent out to the villages to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Personal Points of Interest: Jon enjoys running, translating ancient texts, singing, and hiking. Tess loves acrylic painting (when she can find some quiet) and Pilates.
