Serving In: USA and Global
Ministry: Gap Year

SAMS Role: Missionaries

Home Church: Church of the Ascension, Pittsburgh, PA

Starting Year with SAMS: 2015

Calling to Ministry: When Nate and Erika met on a St. Nicholas Day, one of their first conversations was about God’s heart to see every tongue, tribe, and nation come to Him. They had both served overseas in mission, and had prayed for a partner to serve alongside in God’s kingdom. As God led them into marriage, they continued to trust the Lord to direct their steps in His will. In 2015, Erika read of a unique opportunity with the Anglican Global Mission Partners (AGMP), of which SAMS is a founding partner. AGMP sought directors who would launch a  missional gap year program to engage the global church and raise up leaders in the next generation. Through prayer, faith, and steps of obedience, Nate and Erika responded to the call and began Agape Year as SAMS Missionaries, collaborating with multiple ministries. This call to Agape Year merged their gifts to serve the Kingdom in word and deed.

Vision for Ministry: Through Agape Year, Nate and Erika desire to see young people’s identity anchored to Christ. They seek to see young people become bold proclaimers of the Story to Believe in, beloved members of the Family to Belong to, and active citizens of the Kingdom to Build up. Agape Year Fellows engage in tangible service, spiritual formation, and life lived in community. This vision comes to life both locally, in Pittsburgh, and globally, primarily in Thailand.

Personal Points of Interest: Erika grew up in the great San Joaquin Valley of California before heading east to attend Grove City College. Her bachelor’s in English equipped her to teach ESL in China for three years, during which she earned a master's at Lee University. She returned to the U.S. to teach ESL at the college level in Pittsburgh before earning a Master of Arts in Religion at Trinity School for Ministry. The call to start Agape Year runs true to Erika's loves of community, good books, making beautiful things, coffee, travel, and awkward cross-cultural interactions.

Nathan earned a bachelor’s in Business Management from Grove City College in 2000. He put that to use for 16 years managing businesses small and large before answering the call to launch Agape Year. Naturally inclined to be quiet, he becomes animated when talk turns to bikes, black coffee, skiing, climbing, Wendell Berry, and early-‘80s Toyota trucks.

Nate and Erika love to include their children in their ministry journey in God’s Kingdom.

Favorite Bible Verses: Jude 24-25
