Serving In: Honduras
Ministry: Children at Risk, Childrens Ministry, Missionary
SAMS Role: Missionary

Home Church: St. Peter’s Anglican, Mt Pleasant, SC

Starting Year with SAMS: 2019

Calling to Ministry: Tony Campolo gave a call to mission at Jesus ’78 in Orlando, FL, and he said at the end, “If your heart was burning during this message, then maybe the Lord is calling you to mission.”  My heart was on fire! I took two short-term trips to Costa Rica during my twenties, and finally said yes to going full-time in 1990.  SAMS was sending a team to Honduras, so that’s how I ended up here, and I’m glad I did!

Vision for Ministry: My vision of mission is based on how I understand the Kingdom of God:  It is lived in community.  Our first priority is to love and serve the least of these.  A testimony of commitment to Jesus in every area of our lives is essential as the heart of our obedience to the Great Commission.  God is Sovereign. All of creation is sacred.  Every human being is beloved of God.

Personal Points of Interest: Music:  I play guitar and clarinet.  I love to worship.  Some of my favorite Christian artists are Keith Green, Rich Mullins, and Susan Boyle.  I have a master’s degree in Spiritual Formation, and am currently working on a D.Min. in the same area.  I was originally a high school English teacher and a Christian Ed director before coming to the mission field.  South Carolina is where I grew up and where my birth family lives.  I have fostered many children and have adopted five Hondurans:  Mary, Noah, Sallie, Ethan, and Lucy.  I currently have two foster sons:  Sammy and Joel.  Probably my “passion hobby” is reading:  novels, poetry, spiritual books.  I hesitate to mention a favorite author, but I do go back to Amy Carmichael, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Hudson Taylor, C. S. Lewis, Henri Nouwen, Gustavo Gutierrez, and Adoniram Judson.

Favorite Bible Verse: “I know your works.  Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut.  I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.”  Revelation 3: 8  ESV
